      <image:title>Blog - More Excitement, More Books - If you look close at the table picture above, you can see cards with the cover of Mattson Academy: Mind over Magi. While it was supposed to come out on the 24th, there have been some technical issues causing slight delays, but I promise it’ll be out soon, and I made sure to let everyone know that if they liked the first one, they won’t be waiting long for the second, and that definitely seemed to get people even more excited.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Not only that, the third book is written! It still needs some love and polish, but the hardest part, getting the initial words out, is complete. That means that as soon as book 2 is out I’ll be able to knuckle down and work to hopefully have book 3 out by this time next year. That just leaves book 4 to go, and then the Mattson sage is complete.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - More Excitement, More Books - Or the candy. Halloween is approaching and I wasn’t above a little bribery to draw people closer so I could tell them about Mattson. And tell them I did. I talked this book to death, but after a few tries I settled on a pitch that felt pretty good and seemed to generate a fair bit of interest.</image:title>
      <image:caption>In addition to immediate sales, I also gave out plenty of cards and bookmarks that will hopefully result in later sales as well, but more than that, I also got to meet other authors and forge relationships with new bookstores. Also eat good food. There were food trucks and other stands all over the place and I took full advantage. All in all, it was a completely worthwhile event and one I’ll be looking to repeat in the future.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - More Excitement, More Books - I had a table at the Baltimore Book Festival! I was out there on the streets of Baltimore for almost 18 hours this weekend and it was intense! The other events I’ve done have only been for a few hours and separated by months, so to be out there almost 10 hours one day and 8 the next was a lot.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Worth it though! As exhausted as I am, I had a ton of fun. I had a friend sitting with me the first day and my brother the second, but while the company was much appreciated, there wasn’t a ton of downtime to chat. Both days had a steady stream of people coming by drawn in by my colorful display (or possibly my colorful personality).</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Post Book Signing Excitement - And I met other authors. I was only able to attend this event thanks to a helping hand from my friend, K.C. Smith, someone I was fortunate enough to share a table with at my first book signing. I owe them a huge thank you, and now I’ve met even more authors and gotten even more advice, resources, and connections to help me continue this writing journey.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Basically, this week, and this weekend were great. I had a ton of fun, I learned a lot, I sold some books, and I took an amazing nap (this whole thing was exhausting. But now I’m full speed ahead on Mattson Academy: Mind Over Magi (coming September 3rd, THIS YEAR), finishing Mattson Academy 3 (2 chapters to go), and then… who knows?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Post Book Signing Excitement - The thing that might have gotten the most attention though is the series of tweets to the left. For those unaware, that is the Twitter handle of Jerry Holkins, AKA Tycho Brahe from the webcomic Penny Arcade. I’ve been reading his stuff since I was in high school, which is a long, long time.</image:title>
      <image:caption>They happened to do a strip about a sad looking author sitting alone at a book signing at Barnes and Noble just three days before my event, and I felt the need to comment. I had no expectation whatsoever that it would garner any kind of response, he’s a popular guy after all, so you can imagine my surprise when he just straight up bought my book.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Post Book Signing Excitement - He even retweeted another post I made about it on the day of the event. I was understandably “shook” and made sure that everyone I’ve ever known knew about how excited I was to be recognized, even in passing, by one of my favorite writers.</image:title>
      <image:caption>The event was great, too. I don’t want to undersell that. It was good to spend time with the massive numbers of friends and family that showed up, as well as to meet new future readers. I got to talk to a few folks who were, themselves, actively pursuing writing, some young and some older. It goes without saying that authors also enjoy writing, so most of us (I assume, I guess I can only speak for me) are happy to talk about the process as much as the end result.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Upcoming Events - This time I’ll have more to talk about, too. Not that there isn’t plenty to talk about in Mattson Academy—again, don’t get stuck in a car with me if you aren’t ready to be a sounding board for the construction of a fictional universe—but I’ve also got Mattson Academy: Mind Over Magi stuff to talk about.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Mostly that it exists, that it’s done, and that it’s coming out in less than two months. Not only can they score an awesome book, they can rest comfortably in the knowledge that book 2 is coming soon. I can also share that book 3 is so close to being done and will hopefully come out next year. I’ve got a whole series ready for fantasy enjoyers, I just need to hook ‘em on that first book, so that’s my goal for the event.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Upcoming Events - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>All that to say, if you’re in the Maryland area, specifically around Annapolis, on July 27th, stop in and see me! There will be a bunch of other great authors there as well, and you’ll be able to buy books, get them signed, and talk about stories with the people who write them. I’m excited to be a part of it, and I hope it’s the start of many more to come.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Upcoming Events - This is something I hope I do a little bit better with this time around. The first time I was so nervous and feeling awkward and like I didn’t belong there with the other authors that I don’t think I did a good job really hyping up my story. People would come up and ask what it was about, and I fumbled over my answers a bit.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I also had a ton of friends and family there. That’s great. I don’t want to make it seem like I’m at all ungrateful. Their support meant the world, especially on a night where I was feeling the impostor syndrome, but I think I also used them a bit like a safety net. I was less likely to pitch to strangers when I could just chat up people I know will support me no matter what. I mean, there will be friends and family there (I hope/believe) but I assume fewer since this isn’t the big special first time.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - A Long Overdue Update - That was a big part of the absence was putting a LOT of effort into the final edits. I worked my butt off to get them done to make sure we could hit the September release date, and honestly, it was hard as hell. Hard enough that it really burned me out for a little while afterwards.</image:title>
      <image:caption>…and all the energy I had left (for writing anyway) went into working on finishing the first draft of Mattson 3! As we speak I’m getting ready to start working on the final few chapters of the third installment in this series, and I really hope I can keep up the pace to have this one out next September. Mattson Academy is going to be four books in total, and I really want to keep the story going strong.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - A Long Overdue Update - I haven’t posted in a long time. I’ve been slammed with work both book-related and not, as well as all the normal life things that always seem to get in the way. When I started trying to be more of an “online presence” I thought Tiktok would be the hardest, and early on, it was. Getting in front of the camera was exhausting, and thinking of content even more so. I thought blogging would be the easy part.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I mean, I’m already writing anyway, right? How hard could it be to get out of my Word doc and jump over here for an update? Turns out it was hard. Writing stories is fun, and while I’d love for people to read my stories, I enjoy just writing them. It’s a lot harder to make myself believe people would want to hear my thoughts, feelings, and general inner monologue in written form.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The Magic of Mattson - The other half is Elemental Magic. This is magic that involves the creation and manipulation of the basic elements that make up the world. In Mattson Academy, these elements are Fire, Water, Air, Earth, Lightning, Nature, Light, and Shadow.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I picked eight instead of the more traditional four (think Avatar, the Last Airbender), because I really like Lightning as a magic ability, and I also wanted to include Light and Shadow for thematic reasons (and also they’re cool). Unlike Will Magic, not everyone can use every element. Most people can only use three or four, and they’re really only competent with two.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The Magic of Mattson - Will Magic is a broad category that I like to think of as “standard magic.” It covers a lot of ground, but most of that ground is things we typically think of when we think of magic.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Telekinesis. Telepathy. Teleportation. Tele-anything really. Levitation. Hexes and curses. Summoning monsters. All this and a whole lot more. The main thrust of Will magic is that it is done with a sheer effort of concentration, that the user is applying “mind over matter,” so to speak. It is a type of magic that is available to everyone, though not everyone has the requisite levels of skill, power, and concentration to use every technique available.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - 2023 Wrap Up - 2023 was also the year of my social media explosion. I mean that in terms of mostly how much social media I was putting out, not necessarily how popular it was. I’ve been on Twitter for a few years and I felt like I was doing ok there, but with the book about to be published, I needed to get the word out in as many ways to as many people as possible, so I added this website, TikTok, and Instagram to my repertoire of content output.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I’m very fortunate that my wife is able to help me with this site, because I’m clueless, and, as I mentioned above, I get burned out easily on these sorts of things. I started writing because I like writing. A) I was never sure I’d get published anyway, and B) I hoped the marketing stuff would just sort itself out and happen magically. Clearly, that’s not the case, but I’m out here doing my best. Hopefully that’s enough, and I’m going to try and be both more creative and more consistent in the new year.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - 2023 Wrap Up - It wasn’t all indoors and digital stuff this year. I traveled, too. I spent a week with my family in Tennessee hiking the Great Smoky Mountains. We probably hiked more than I’ve ever hiked in my life and honestly it was up there for some of the best sights I’ve ever seen. We also spent a week at the beach where we saw dolphins almost every day. It wasn’t a new beach, but it’s one of my favorite places to be and I tore through some books and got some good sketches done while I was there.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I’ve been to three weddings this year. That’s a lot of exposure to extended family. Fortunately, I like my extended family. It particularly helps that they’ve all been excited and supportive of my writing journey this year, although, to be perfectly honest, talking about my book and myself that much was exhausting. It’s the same reason I have trouble blogging, or TikToking, or marketing of any kind. Still, it was great to be there to support family on their special days, and they were all wonderful parties.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - 2023 Wrap Up - I read books this year. I didn’t keep count, and I’m not going to list them all, but I don’t think you can be a particularly good writer without doing some reading (also I happen to enjoy it). I started with the Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. I picked up a few other YA and fantasy novels over the year like All of Us Villains (and I started its sequel All of Our Demise), The Grimrose Girls, Vicious, and most recently Legends and Lattes—which I destroyed in just a few days.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I read much differently than I used to. For starters, I read a little less. Time that might have been spent reading is now split between reading and writing. I also read much more analytically. I used to just read and enjoy (or not). Now I’m more aware of structure, pacing, use of prose. I see descriptions for physical features or actions and I think, Man, that’s a good way to put that. It’s a weird thing, because now that I’m writing as seriously as I am, I don’t think I can ever go back to just reading.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Blog - 2023 Wrap Up - This was a great year for video games for me too. Games often get in the way of my writing and drawing and other more productive pursuits, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Video games have been a big part of my life since I was a kid, and I originally wanted to be a game designer (though I’ve since realized I just wanted to tell stories and they were the medium I thought I could best do that).</image:title>
      <image:caption>Marvel Snap, being on my phone, probably takes the title of most played game, and I do very much enjoy it. I used to play Hearthstone, and I’ve always played card games like Pokémon and Magic the Gathering, and it feels like a very distilled version of that experience. I also got to relive my childhood with Sea of Stars, an homage to some of the greatest SNES RPGs I grew up with, and then the Mario RPG Remake, a literal remake of one of the greatest SNES RPGs I grew up with.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - 2023 Wrap Up - I wasn’t doing a good job blogging regularly. I said I was going to do it more frequently, and then I’d burn out and forget it for a month. More recently, I committed to just every other week on Sunday nights. I didn’t realize at that time that schedule would put me squarely on New Year’s Eve, but I think it’s pretty fitting. So, with serendipity at my back, I’m going to try and sum up what has been an insane year.</image:title>
      <image:caption>First and foremost, I published a book. That was the big thing. I was under contract and working on editing in 2022, but the bulk of the work, the build-up, and the actual publishing happened in 2023, so here it is. Mattson Academy, the story I’ve spent the last seven years working on, came out into the world on 9/5/2023, and I could not be more happy. Now, with the lead unburied, let’s back it up.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Round Two! Write! - I wrote other books! I wrote a vampire novel. I started a weird west story about a bounty hunter. I did NaNoWriMo twice, once with a cyberpunk heist novel and once with a slightly supernatural murder mystery (a series I plan to revisit someday). I tried my hand at short stories (with little to no success).</image:title>
      <image:caption>Only after all that did I start writing Mattson Academy 2. It took me longer to write, almost a full year compared to the six months the first draft of Mattson 1 took. Some of that is the way COVID and my general life shift post-pandemic affected my writing. I used to have much more of a routine than I do these days. But I’ve started editing it now that the contract is signed and I’ve noticed something. It’s clear this ain’t my first rodeo.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Blog - Round Two! Write! - Mattson Academy is the first story I ever wrote. I started writing it in 2017, and it took six months to get the first draft done. From there, I spent a TON of time editing it, rewriting it, getting feedback, and editing it some more. I went through multiple revisions, all the while shopping it around to agents and publishers to no avail. It wasn’t until the end of 2021 that I was fortunate enough to find my publisher, BSC Publishing Group, and in early 2022 I was officially under contract.</image:title>
      <image:caption>That meant more editing! Almost another year’s worth of editing on and off to get everything just right and ready to publish. It was not my favorite part of the process by any stretch of the imagination, but in the end, I’m glad for it because I learned a lot, and I’m proud of the final product we put out. But all that time, I was doing other stuff, too.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Blog - Round Two! Write! - This is not to say that Mattson 2 is a better book than Mattson 1. I’ll let you all be the judge of that in about 10 months. But I think it’s going to take a lot less editing to get it to the same level of quality as book 1. A lot of the things I learned through writing in different genres and styles and getting feedback from readers all filtered in. Mattson 2 may or may not be a better story, but its first draft was WORLDS better than Mattson 1’s first draft.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I’m stoked to get to put out another book in this world. Mattson is my passion project. It’s my love letter to the fantasy genre, full of all the tropes I enjoy with both send-ups and subversions. I’m looking forward to working just as hard on Mattson 2 and letting the series continue and putting another great story out into the world. I hope you’ll check them out!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - A Beach Book for All Seasons - One of the books I brought to the beach was The Grimrose Girls, by Laura Pohl. The cover caught my eye, the description sounded up my alley—classic fairytale retellings with a dark academia setting, some of the quotes even mentioned a favorite show of mine, Grimm—so I snagged it, and, sure enough, I devoured it. I would also probably rate it a 3.5 out of 5 stars. Now, I don’t mean that in any disrespectful way; I’ve said from the get-go that I’d be happy with nothing but 3 star reviews for my own novel, Mattson Academy. For me, it did exactly what it needed to, nothing more and nothing less. It was fun, it was compelling, I liked most of the characters, and I wanted to see where it went. I called the ending miles out, but that’s ok, because I wasn’t looking for for a brain teaser. I was looking to relax on vacation. I got to feel smart, enjoy a fun story, and plow through a book in a few days</image:title>
      <image:caption>I love books like that. I’m a busy guy. I’ve got a job, and I write, and I coach soccer, and I take my kid to other sports, and occasionally I even spend time with my family. I don’t have time to read a deep, life-changing book that’s going to make me reevaluate my life every other week. Sometimes I just want something fun. A beach book.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - A Beach Book for All Seasons - We all know what a beach book is, right? It’s a book you’d read at the beach, duh. More specifically, in my opinion, a beach book is an easy read. You’re going to get through it quickly, say, over the span of a trip to the beach, so a long weekend or maybe a week (though if I’m gone for a week, I tend to bring two books just to be safe). It’s also not usually a book that’s going to make you think overmuch. I mean, I brought the collected works of H.P. Lovecraft to the beach once, but I’m weird. When you’re at the beach, you’re distracted. You’re going to be talking to people, you’ll be in and out of the water, you’re going to be doing stuff. That means you need a book you can pick up and put down with ease.</image:title>
      <image:caption>This year I have the perfect example from my own trip this past summer.</image:caption>
